Solo
My Northern Voices (2008)
Debut solo album, recorded in East Jordan, MI at the home of Steve and Jana Middaugh, late December 2007.
I sent homemade tapes that fall to Andréa Moreno-Beals, Trevor Hobbs, and Micah Middaugh, of the band Breathe Owl Breathe. Micah offered up his parents’ tiny, circular cabin, with an essential wood stove, for the session. Trevor’s brother, Ryan, a fantastic recording engineer who lived in Atlanta at the time, happened to be home for the holidays and was down to engineer at the last minute. The album really belongs to Trevor and Andréa, the all-stars of the project. We recorded the whole thing in three days. Ian Gorman mixed and mastered. Eana Apple Agopian designed and drew the artwork. Available on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Physical CD.

Michael Beauchamp-Cohen & Brian Koenigsknecht
The Windmill (2020)
Co-write single with stellar Michigan-based songwriter and singer Brian Koenigsknecht.
Recorded in a few hours at Kalamazoo's La Luna with Ian Gorman. The song is about grief and sorrow and loss and memory and time, and it was written as a salve to sooth the wreckage wrought by those things. Available on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon.

Red Tail Ring, my decade-plus collaboration with the writer and multi-instrumentalist Laurel Premo. Officially the tag line of the duo is “Old-Time Roots, New-Time Sounds,” which has been the goal since we first met in Ann Arbor in 2009, to both interpret traditional music in new ways and write original music to expand the canon. Red Tail Ring has released one EP (August Roads), four full length albums (Middlewest Chant, Mountain Shout, The Heart’s Swift Foot, Fall Away Blues), and a vinyl collaboration with our friends in Lindsay Lou (The New Roots Exchange). The duo is known for its tight harmonies and expansive arrangements, and has played nearly 1,000 shows in the U.S., Canada, and eight other countries across three continents. Visit www.redtailring.com for more information. Recordings can be found at Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Physical CD.
Bowhunter String Band is a Michigan-based dance band featuring myself, Laurel Premo, Samantha Cooper, and Sam Herman. Bowhunter has released one full length album (2014’s The Right Hands ‘Round) and, since 2012, has provided music for scores of festivals and dance events all over the Midwest. Playing dance music in Bowhunter has, for me, been an essential outlet in exploring old fiddle music. There’s really nothing more riveting than being in a dance band. Recordings can be found by visiting Apple Music, Amazon, Physical CD.
The Ambitious Brothers
Ann Arbor trio featuring Chris Bathgate and Karl Sturk, 2004-2006. The name was always ironic, of course. But, despite that irrefutable fact, a number of my early songs were written for the ears of Chris and Karl, and the experience of having encouraging and enthusiastic friends to write music for was essential to my development as a writer. We all lived on Ann Street. Karl danced as hard as anyone but didn’t drink. Chris was surprisingly domestic and was always making cookies and pies without warning. We recorded two albums in a basement. They exist on the CD-Rs of America.

The Dumb and Ugly Club - My early aughts collaboration with the magical writer and electric guitar player Gina Pensiero. Gina and I met our first day in the dorms at the University of Michigan and instantly bonded over our bizarre shared love of the no-hit wonder indie band Sammy. Our first show was opening up for Seth Bernard at the Crazy Wisdom Tearoom and Bookstore. We showed up ten minutes after the show started, so Seth opened up for us opening up for him. He was very gracious about it. Gina and I released two long EPs (Dead in Chicago and Mars, 1967 - the latter of which about a fictional space war in 1967). Gina has continued to write and record under various names (Umberto, Palmyra, Soft Center, to name a few). You can listen to The Dumb and Ugly Club on Bandcamp and AllMusic.
